Astronomy & the X-ray and gamma ray spectrum

Astronomy & the X-ray and gamma ray spectrum. This part of the electromagnetic spectrum contains gamma rays (left) & X-rays (right). X-rays border on extreme ultraviolet (far right). They are absorbed by atoms in the atmosphere. Gamma rays can penetrate far enough to be detected by high- altitude balloons. High-energy (short wavelength) gamma rays create pulses of light (Cerenkov radiation, bottom left) that can be detected from the ground. X-rays & gamma rays can also be detected by instruments in spacecraft above the atmosphere. Sources of X-rays & gamma rays include the Sun (centre right), galactic clusters (upper centre) and supernova remnants (far right)

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the fascinating world of astronomy and the X-ray and gamma ray spectrum. The image beautifully illustrates the different components of this part of the electromagnetic spectrum, with gamma rays on the left and X-rays on the right. At the far right, X-rays border on extreme ultraviolet, a region where they are absorbed by atoms in our atmosphere. While X-rays can only be detected by instruments in spacecraft above Earth's atmosphere due to their absorption properties, gamma rays have enough penetrating power to be detected even from high-altitude balloons. In fact, high-energy gamma rays create pulses of light known as Cerenkov radiation (bottom left), which can be observed from ground-based detectors. The sources that emit these energetic forms of radiation are diverse and awe-inspiring. From our very own Sun at center-right to galactic clusters located upper-center in this image, and even supernova remnants at far right - all contribute to this mesmerizing display within our universe. This artwork not only highlights the beauty found within astrophysics but also emphasizes how crucial advanced astronomical detectors are for studying celestial objects emitting X-rays and gamma rays. Science Photo Library has once again captured an extraordinary moment in space exploration through their lens, providing us with a glimpse into one of nature's most powerful phenomena: electromagnetic waves beyond what is visible to our naked eye.
