Queens South Africa Medal, Second Boer War 1899-1902

This medal was awarded to Second Lieutenant Charles F. Call, with four clasps. It is one of 17 campaign medals awarded to members of the Call family, now in the museum collection. The medals date from the Peninsular War (1807-1814) to the Great War (1914-1918). The Call family served with the Royal Irish Regiment, which until 1881 was known as the 18th Regiment of Foot. It was also known as the 18th (Royal Irish) Regiment of Foot and the 18th (The Royal Irish) Regiment of Foot. The regiment was disbanded in 1922. The Queens South Africa medal was a British campaign medal awarded to British and colonial military personnel, civilians employed in official capacity and war correspondents who served in the Second Boer War in South Africa (1899-1902). The clasps awarded were Cape Colony (11th October 1899 - 31st May 1902); Transvaal (24th May 1900); South Africa (1st January 1901); and South Africa (1st January 1902). Designed by G.W. de Saulles, this silver medal bears the head of Queen Victoria with the inscription VICTORIA REGINA ET IMPERATRIX. The reverse depicts Britannia holding the Union Flag and a laurel wreath with troops marching in the background and the inscription SOUTH AFRICA. The ribbon consists of five stripes in gold, dark blue and red. TRURI : 1931.40.54

23"x19" (58x48cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 16x12 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 23x19 inches (584x482mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the prestigious Queens South Africa Medal, a symbol of honor and bravery during the Second Boer War from 1899 to 1902. The medal belonged to Second Lieutenant Charles F. Call, a member of the esteemed Call family who served with the Royal Irish Regiment. The Call family's legacy is deeply intertwined with military history, as evident by their impressive collection of 17 campaign medals spanning from the Peninsular War to World War I. The Royal Irish Regiment, formerly known as the 18th Regiment of Foot and later as the 18th (Royal Irish) Regiment of Foot, played a significant role in their service. Designed by G. W. de Saulles, this silver medal features Queen Victoria's profile on one side with the inscription VICTORIA REGINA ET IMPERATRIX. On its reverse side, Britannia proudly holds both the Union Flag and a laurel wreath while troops march in the background under an inscription that reads SOUTH AFRICA. The four clasps adorning this particular medal signify Lieutenant Charles F. Call's remarkable contributions throughout different stages of conflict: Cape Colony (11th October 1899 - 31st May 1902), Transvaal (24th May 1900), South Africa (1st January 1901), and South Africa (1st January 1902). Now housed within our museum collection at Royal Cornwall Museum, this photograph captures not only an extraordinary piece but also pays tribute to those who selflessly served their country during times of war.
