Salmon fishing on the River Severn is carried on by the same method as has been in

Salmon fishing on the River Severn is carried on by the same method as has been in existence for hundreds of years. Putchers which look like trumpets made of wicker, are placed in the river by hundreds and when the salmon come up the river to spawn they enter one end of the putcher and because they will not go backwards they struggle to get out of the small hole the other end and eventually drown themselves. When the tide in the river flows out the Salmon catchers collect the Salmon lying in the putchers

Elderly Fishing Pensioner

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
Salmon fishing on the River Severn has remained unchanged for centuries, as depicted in this photo print. The age-old method involves the use of putchers, which resemble wicker trumpets and are strategically placed in the river by the hundreds. As salmon make their way upriver to spawn, they unwittingly enter one end of these putchers. However, due to their instinctual refusal to swim backwards, they find themselves trapped within the narrow confines of the other end. In a desperate struggle for freedom, these majestic creatures ultimately meet a tragic fate by drowning themselves. This poignant image captures a snapshot from November 1944 during World War II's home front era. An elderly pensioner can be seen engaged in this traditional fishing practice that not only sustains livelihoods but also reflects resilience amidst challenging times. With rugged determination etched on his weathered face, he exemplifies an unwavering commitment to preserving ancient techniques despite global turmoil. The significance of this photograph lies not only in its historical context but also its portrayal of industry and man's connection with nature. It serves as a reminder that even amid war and uncertainty, communities continue to rely on age-old practices passed down through generations. As we gaze upon this remarkable visual relic captured by Mirrorpix, we are transported back in time to witness an enduring tradition that has shaped both local culture and our understanding of sustainable fishing methods.
