Brewing Cooking Grain Huts Millet Pots Preparing Senegal Senegalese Fermenting

23"x19" (58x48cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 16x12 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 23x19 inches (584x482mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the daily life of a woman from the Cerere tribe in Senegal during the 1910s. The scene takes place in a traditional West African village, where huts made of mud and thatch are scattered across the landscape. The woman is shown in front of her hut, standing over a large pot filled with millet grain. Her expression is focused and determined as she stirs the grain with a long wooden spoon, preparing it for fermentation. Fermentation was an essential process in the diet and cultural practices of the Cerere people, who lived primarily in the Senegal River Valley. The millet grain was soaked in water and left to ferment for several days, during which time it would transform into a sour and slightly alcoholic beverage. This drink, known as "tchoukoumou," was an essential part of the Cerere diet and was consumed regularly for its nutritional value and medicinal properties. The woman's attire reflects her connection to her community and the natural environment. She wears a long, flowing dress made of brightly colored fabric, adorned with intricate patterns and beadwork. Her head is covered with a large, colorful scarf, which protects her from the sun and the elements. The pot she uses is made of earthenware, a common material in traditional African cooking. This photograph offers a glimpse into the rich cultural traditions of the Cerere people and the importance of community, agriculture, and the natural world in their daily lives. It is a poignant reminder of the resilience and ingenuity of African communities and their deep connection to the land and its resources.
