Studio photograph of an Australian VAD patient

Studio photograph of an Australian Sergeant. He is sitting on a small table against a backdrop of a curtained window. His hat is beside him on the table. He is wearing an identity bracelet on his right wrist. He may have been a patient at the Quex Park VAD Hospital. The Quex Park VAD Hospital opened on 15 October 1914 and closed on 31 January 1919. The hospital was run by Kent/178, the Birchington Detachment. The Commandant was Hannah Powell-Cotton (1881-1964), wife of Major Percy HG Powell-Cotton (1866-1940) of Quex Park, founder of the Powell-Cotton Museum. Date: circa 1918

23"x19" (58x48cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 16x12 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 23x19 inches (584x482mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant studio photograph captures the image of an Australian sergeant, likely a patient at the Quex Park Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) Hospital during World War I. Dressed in military uniform, he sits confidently on a small table, his hat placed beside him. An identity bracelet is visible on his right wrist, a common identification measure during the war. The serene backdrop of a curtained window with a view of the sea adds a sense of tranquility to the scene. The Quex Park VAD Hospital, located in Birchington, Kent, England, opened on October 15, 1914, and closed on January 31, 1919. Run by the Birchington Detachment, the hospital was commanded by Hannah Powell-Cotton, wife of Major Percy HG Powell-Cotton, founder of the Powell-Cotton Museum and a resident of Quex Park. The hospital provided essential care and support to wounded soldiers from the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) during their recovery from injuries sustained on the battlefield. The sergeant's strong posture and determined expression suggest a man who has faced adversity and is determined to overcome it. The photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by soldiers during the war and the crucial role of medical facilities like the Quex Park VAD Hospital in their recovery.
