17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored lithograph, published in 1855 by Verlag von Krais & Hoffmann in Stuttgart, Germany, showcases the skeletons of two extinct creatures that once roamed the American continents: the American mastodon, Mammut americanum, and the giant ground sloth, Mylodon robustus. Dr. F.A. Schmidt's Petrefactenbuch, or "Book of Petrifications," was a groundbreaking publication that introduced both specialists and general readers to the fascinating world of fossils and palaeontology. The American mastodon, represented in this image, was a large, elephant-like creature that lived during the Pleistocene epoch, around 11,000 to 17,000 years ago. Its skeleton, with its distinctive curved tusks and elongated lower jaw, is depicted on the left side of the print. The mastodon's massive size and robust build made it an awe-inspiring creature, and its extinction remains a mystery to this day. On the right side of the lithograph, the skeleton of the giant ground sloth, Mylodon robustus, is depicted. This colossal sloth, which could grow up to 10 feet long and weigh over 4 tons, was a dominant presence in the South American landscapes during the Late Pleistocene and Early Holocene periods. Its elongated limbs and powerful claws, which are clearly visible in the print, allowed it to move efficiently through its forested habitat. The intricate details of these skeletons, captured in the lithograph, provide a glimpse into the past, offering a window into the lives of these magnificent creatures that once inhabited our planet. Dr. Schmidt's Petrefactenbuch, with its stunning illustrations, played a significant role in fueling the public's fascination with fossils and palaeontology, paving the way for further discoveries and advancements in our understanding of Earth's rich history.
