Dr. F.A. Schmidt's Petrefactenbuch, or "Book of Petrifications," was a groundbreaking publication that introduced both specialists and general readers to the fascinating world of fossils and palaeontology. The American mastodon, represented in this image, was a large, elephant-like creature that lived during the Pleistocene epoch, around 11,000 to 17,000 years ago.
