17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning color-printed woodblock engraving depicts the vibrant Scarlet Japanese mountain camellias, or Yama tsubaki (Thea japonica Nois. Forma), a beautiful and symbolic plant in Japanese culture. The engraving is the work of Kan en Iwasaki (1786-1842), a renowned Japanese botanist, entomologist, and zoologist. Iwasaki was one of the first Japanese scholars to integrate Western scientific knowledge into his studies, making him a pioneer in the field. The illustration is taken from Honzo Zufu, an Illustrated Guide to Medicinal Plants, published in 1884. The meticulously detailed engraving showcases the scarlet blooms of the Yama tsubaki, which are known for their resilience and ability to thrive in mountainous regions. The plant's rich, velvety petals and glossy green leaves are brought to life through the intricate woodblock printing technique. The Scarlet Japanese mountain camellia holds significant cultural importance in Japan. It is believed that the camellia's scarlet blossoms represent the sun, and the plant is often associated with the Shinto goddess Amaterasu, who is believed to have brought the sun to the world. The Yama tsubaki is also celebrated for its medicinal properties, as its leaves and flowers have been used in traditional Japanese medicine for centuries to treat various ailments. This exquisite woodblock engraving not only serves as a testament to Iwasaki's mastery of botanical illustration but also provides a glimpse into the rich history of Japanese botany and cultural traditions.
