23"x19" (58x48cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 16x12 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 23x19 inches (584x482mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcolored copperplate engraving showcases the captivating beauty of a Pied Seal or Harbor Seal, Phoca bicolor. The image, taken from The Naturalist's Pocket Magazine; or, Complete Cabinet of the Curiosities and Beauties of Nature, published by Harrison in London between 1798 and 1802, offers a detailed and accurate representation of this fascinating marine mammal. The Pied Seal, also known as the Harbor Seal, is a common species found along the North Atlantic and North Pacific coasts. With its distinctive coat, the seal appears to be adorned with a piebald pattern, hence its name. Its thick, velvety fur is primarily grayish-brown on the back and sides, while the belly is white or cream-colored. The seal's face, ears, and flippers are also white, making for a striking contrast against its darker body. Thomas Pennant, a renowned naturalist and author, contributed significantly to the scientific knowledge of the Pied Seal during this period. The Naturalist's Pocket Magazine, which aimed to provide an accessible and comprehensive record of natural history, was an essential resource for those interested in the natural world. This engraving, carefully crafted by skilled artisans, serves as a testament to the meticulous attention to detail and dedication to scientific accuracy that characterized the works of the time. The Pied Seal is a versatile and adaptable creature, capable of diving to depths of up to 600 feet and staying underwater for extended periods. Its diet consists primarily of fish, crustaceans, and mollusks. This image offers a glimpse into the rich natural history of the past, providing a window into the world of these captivating marine mammals.
