EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the ancient Ziggurat Shrine of Ur, located in the historic region of Mesopotamia in modern-day Iraq. The Ziggurat, a flat-topped temple with a sacred shrine at its center, stands proudly within a hallowed enclosure. This architectural marvel, also known as the Great Ziggurat or the Temple Whose Foundations Create an Aura, was constructed during the Early Bronze Age, around the 21st century BC. Over the centuries, the structure had crumbled to ruins by the 6th century BC during the Neo-Babylonian period. However, it was meticulously restored by King Nabonidus, leaving behind the impressive remains that we see today. The Ziggurat of Ur, once a place of reverence for the ancient Assyrians, is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Mesopotamia. This photograph, taken in 1925, captures the essence of this historical site before extensive excavations by Sir Leonard Woolley in the 1920s and 1930s. The Ziggurat's enduring allure continues to draw scholars, historians, and visitors alike, offering a glimpse into the ancient world and its fascinating history.
