1972 Evidence Hairline Lusitania Publication Sinking Steamer Target

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
RMS Lusitania: New Evidence on the Unprovoked Sinking that Dragged Us toward War - Cover Design, Life Magazine, 13 October 1972 The cover design of the 13 October 1972 issue of Life magazine features a powerful and evocative image that captures the historical significance of the sinking of the RMS Lusitania. This steamer, a symbol of the Belle Époque era of ocean travel, was tragically sunk off the coast of Ireland on May 7, 1915, during World War I. The cover design, created in the 1970s, is a contemporary representation of this momentous event that played a crucial role in drawing the United States into the war. The design, which is reminiscent of a target or a hairline crosswire, is striking in its simplicity and impact. The title, "RMS Lusitania: New Evidence on the Unprovoked Sinking that Dragged Us toward War," is displayed prominently in bold, capitalized letters, with the subheading, "7 May 1915," positioned below. The image of the Lusitania itself is depicted in a stylized, almost abstracted form, with its hull split in two and the water around it churning with energy. The overall effect is one of tension, danger, and historical importance. This cover design, which is part of the extensive collection of historical images available from Mary Evans Prints Online, offers a fascinating glimpse into the visual language of journalism during the 1970s. It is a poignant reminder of the role that media played in shaping public opinion and awareness during times of conflict, and the enduring power of visual storytelling to capture the imagination and evoke emotion.
