23"x19" (58x48cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 16x12 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 23x19 inches (584x482mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a moment from the past at the Caterham Imbeciles Asylum in Surrey, England, during a male training workshop around 1923. The Caterham Asylum, like its twin at Leavesden, was established in 1870 by the Metropolitan Asylums Board to provide care and support for London's sick poor, specifically those with mental conditions such as epilepsy and severe learning difficulties. The image shows a group of men, likely patients or residents of the asylum, engaged in a hands-on learning experience. They are gathered around a table, intently focused on their tasks, with one man demonstrating a technique to the others. The atmosphere is one of determination and purpose, as they strive to acquire new skills and abilities. The Caterham Asylum, which closed in 1993, was part of a larger movement in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to provide institutional care for individuals with mental health challenges. At the time, such institutions were seen as a more humane alternative to the previous practice of keeping people with mental health conditions in workhouses or prisons. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, providing a poignant reminder of the efforts made to support and care for those with mental health challenges during a time when such care was not readily available in the community. It also highlights the importance of education and training in helping individuals to live fulfilling lives, a principle that remains relevant today.
