GLC-LFB HQ Major Control Unit
The GLC-LFB was created on 1 April 1965. A series of photos was commissioned of each type of fire engine, either within or absorbed into the enlarged London Fire Brigade. The Brigade was divided into three Command areas, Northern, Eastern and Southern, each with a Command Headquarters which had a Command major control unit stationed at it. A further major control unit was stationed at Lambeth, Brigade HQ, as seen here

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame
FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the Major Control Unit of the Greater London Council-London Fire Brigade (GLC-LFB) Headquarters, located at Lambeth, London, in the 1960s. The GLC-LFB was formed on 1 April 1965, following the merger of various fire services in and around London. In order to effectively manage this enlarged brigade, it was divided into three Command areas: Northern, Eastern, and Southern, each with a Command Headquarters. This image showcases the Major Control Unit stationed at Brigade HQ in Lambeth. The Major Control Unit was responsible for coordinating and dispatching fire engines and other appliances to incidents across the city. The control room was equipped with the latest technology and communication systems to ensure a swift and efficient response. The room was manned by highly trained fire officers who were responsible for assessing the nature of each call and dispatching the most appropriate fire engine or appliance. The photograph features several fire appliances, including fire engines and vans, parked outside the control unit. These vehicles were part of the GLC-LFB's fleet and were stationed at various fire stations across the city. The appliances were ready to be dispatched at a moment's notice to attend to any fire emergencies. The Major Control Unit at Lambeth was a crucial part of the GLC-LFB's operations during the 1960s. Its role in coordinating the response to fires and other emergencies ensured that the brigade was able to provide a swift and effective service to the people of London. This photograph provides a fascinating glimpse into the past, offering a unique insight into the workings of the GLC-LFB during this period.
