India - Deolali - British Garrison
British Garrison at Deolali, in Nashik District in the state of Maharashtra, India - British soldiers and Officers outside the Billiard Room. The name of the town is the source of the British slang noun " doolally tap", loosely meaning " camp fever", referring to the apparent madness of men waiting for ships back to Britain. By the 1940s this had been shortened to " doolally". Date: circa 1910s

Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative black-and-white photograph captures the essence of the British Garrison at Deolali, located in the picturesque Nashik District of Maharashtra, India. Established in the late 18th century, Deolali served as an important military camp for the British East India Company, with its strategic location providing easy access to the north-western frontier. The scene depicted in this image showcases a group of British soldiers and officers outside the Billiard Room, a popular recreational space within the garrison. The name "Deolali" is believed to be the origin of the British slang term "doolally tap," which roughly translates to "camp fever." This term emerged during the long waits for ships back to Britain and was used to describe the apparent madness or restlessness experienced by soldiers during their extended stays in India. The soldiers in this photograph appear relaxed and engaged, with some deep in thought while others engage in animated conversation. The billiard table, a common fixture in British military establishments, is a testament to the importance of leisure activities in maintaining morale during prolonged deployments. The lush greenery and well-manicured grounds surrounding the garrison add to the serene atmosphere, providing a stark contrast to the harsh realities of military life. This photograph offers a glimpse into a bygone era, transporting us back to a time when the British Empire stretched across the globe and Deolali stood as a vital outpost in India.
