Berwick Cruiser Heavy Johns Newfoundland Prewar

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the HMS Berwick, a British County class heavy cruiser, anchored in the harbor of St. John's, Newfoundland, in August 1939. The image was taken just on the cusp of the Second World War, with tensions in Europe mounting and the imminent declaration of war only weeks away. The HMS Berwick, with its distinctive silhouette and impressive size, dominates the scene. Its powerful guns and advanced technology represented the cutting edge of naval warfare at the time, making it a formidable presence on the waters. The surrounding buildings and houses of St. John's add a sense of scale and context, with their quaint architecture and tranquil atmosphere providing a stark contrast to the impending conflict. The 1930s, also known as the '30s or the Thirties, was a decade marked by economic instability and political turmoil. The image of the HMS Berwick in St. John's harbor serves as a reminder of the precarious peace that existed before the outbreak of the Second World War. The cruiser's presence in Newfoundland was part of the British naval effort to protect the vital shipping lanes and resources in the North Atlantic, which would become a major theater of war in the coming years. This photograph is a testament to the rich maritime history of Newfoundland and the pivotal role it played in the events leading up to the Second World War. It is a poignant reminder of a time when the world stood on the brink of conflict, and the might of the British Navy stood as a bulwark against the forces of darkness.
