1897 Bombay Colonialism Diamond Jubilee Mumbai

23"x19" (58x48cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 16x12 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 23x19 inches (584x482mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the scene of the Loyal Diamond Jubilee Gathering held at the Queens Statue in Bombay (now Mumbai) on June 22, 1897. The Diamond Jubilee marked the sixtieth anniversary of Queen Victoria's reign, making her the longest-reigning monarch in British history up to that point. The event was celebrated across the vast British Empire, including in India, which was then under British colonial rule. The image showcases a large gathering of Europeans, dressed in their finest attire, assembled in front of the imposing Queens Statue. The statue, located in the heart of Bombay's Colaba area, was a symbol of British colonial power and authority. The men, many of them officers in the British Indian Army, stand at attention, while the women and children sit on the grass, enjoying the festivities. The photograph offers a glimpse into the colonial past of India, a time when Bombay was a thriving British port city. The British Raj had a profound impact on Indian society, culture, and politics, shaping the country in ways that are still felt today. The image also underscores the complex relationship between the British and the Indian people during this period, one marked by both subjugation and cooperation. The Diamond Jubilee Gathering at the Queens Statue in Bombay was a significant event in the history of colonial India, a testament to the power and reach of the British Empire at its height. This photograph, with its rich historical context, offers a fascinating window into the past, inviting us to reflect on the complex legacy of colonialism in India and its ongoing impact on the world today.
