Caricature of A W Pinero, actor and playwright

Caricature of Sir Arthur Wing Pinero (1855-1934), English actor, playwright and stage director. Seen here outside the Globe Theatre, London, where an adaptation of Thomas Hardys novel, Far From the Madding Crowd, is in production. Pinero thinks its very much like his play, The Squire, which he based on Hardys novel. The irony is that this new production is an adaptation by Hardy himself.

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this caricature, Sir Arthur Wing Pinero, a renowned English actor, playwright, and stage director of the Victorian era, is depicted outside the iconic Globe Theatre in London, where an adaptation of Thomas Hardy's novel, "Far From the Madding Crowd," is underway. The year is 1882, and the 1880s are in full swing. Pinero, wearing a top hat and a thoughtful expression, appears deep in contemplation as he gazes at the theatre. The irony in this scene is palpable. Pinero, who is famed for his adaptation of Hardy's novel "The Squire," believes that this new production is strikingly similar to his play. Unbeknownst to him, however, the adaptation is not by an unknown playwright but by Hardy himself. The author of "Far From the Madding Crowd" has taken the liberty of adapting his own work for the stage. Pinero's caricatured profile, with a monocle peeking out from beneath the brim of his hat, adds to the humorous and satirical tone of the image. The scene is a testament to the vibrant theatrical scene of the Victorian era, where plagiarism and adaptation were common practices, and where the lines between originality and inspiration were often blurred. This evocative image, captured by Terry Parker for Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a fascinating glimpse into the world of Victorian theatre and literature. It serves as a reminder of the rich history of adaptation and the enduring influence of the works of Thomas Hardy and Sir Arthur Wing Pinero.
