Scenes in Japan: the town and harbour of Simonosaki, 1864. Creators: Unknown, Mason Jackson

Scenes in Japan: the town and harbour of Simonosaki, 1864. A large number of junks of all sizes stop at this town to obtain water and other necessaries, on their way through the Inland Sea. It is situated in a very commanding position for the purposes of trade, and might become a flourishing seaport if opened to foreign commerce. Junks of the largest size and of the most grotesque build are here to be met with. They are all more or less ornamented with copper devices on their sterns; but they have, in general, a very clumsy appearance, and their sailing qualities, as may be imagined, are not very good'. From "Illustrated London News", 1864

23"x19" (58x48cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 16x12 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 23x19 inches (584x482mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the bustling town and harbor of Simonosaki in 1864, offering a glimpse into the vibrant maritime trade of 19th century Japan. The scene is filled with an array of junks - traditional Chinese sailing ships - of all sizes, stopping at the town to replenish their supplies before continuing their journey through the Inland Sea. The engraving, originally featured in the "Illustrated London News," highlights the strategic location of Simonosaki for trade, noting its potential to become a flourishing seaport if opened to foreign commerce. The junks depicted in the image are described as large and ornately decorated with copper devices on their sterns, yet possessing a somewhat clumsy appearance due to their unique build. As rowboats and sailboats navigate the waters surrounding Simonosaki, one can imagine the sights and sounds that would have filled this bustling port city over a century ago. This historical snapshot serves as a reminder of Japan's rich maritime heritage and its importance as a hub for international trade during this period. With intricate details captured in this engraving by Mason Jackson from Heritage Images, viewers are transported back in time to witness firsthand the beauty and complexity of life in 19th century Japan.
