17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
Saint Willibrord, a revered figure in both Dutch and European history, is depicted in this exquisite 17th-century pen and brown ink and brush and brown wash drawing by Abraham Bloemaert. Dated around 1625-1630, the artwork showcases the Anglo-Saxon saint in his bishop's apparel, seated in a contemplative pose. Born in Northumbria, England, in the 8th century, Willibrord was a missionary who dedicated his life to spreading Christianity in the Low Countries, particularly among the Frisians. His efforts were instrumental in establishing the diocese of Utrecht, making him the first bishop of the city. Bloemaert masterfully captures the essence of Saint Willibrord's character and piety in this drawing. The bishop is shown wearing the traditional clerical clothing of the time, including a long, flowing robe, a cape, and a mitre adorned with crosses. His serious expression and the gentle curve of his hands suggest a deep connection with his faith. The artwork's intricate details, such as the textured fabric of the robe and the delicate folds of the cape, demonstrate Bloemaert's exceptional drafting skills. The use of pen and ink drawing, combined with brown wash and opaque white water, adds depth and contrast to the image. This drawing is an essential addition to any collection of European religious art, showcasing the Mannerist style that was popular during the 17th century in the Netherlands. It is currently housed in the Art Institute of Chicago and serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of Saint Willibrord and the artistic prowess of Abraham Bloemaert.
