1800s 1865 Albumen Print Hand Colored Biwa Hand Tinted

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
Biwa Lake, 1865: A Glimpse into Japan's Rich Historical Landscape This exquisite 19th century albumen print, hand colored, captures the serene beauty of Biwa Lake in Japan during the year 1865. The lake, located in Shiga Prefecture, has been a significant cultural and historical site for over a thousand years. This image, created by an unknown artist, offers a window into Japan's rich heritage and its deep connection to nature. The photograph showcases the picturesque lake surrounded by lush greenery, with several ancient monuments and structures visible along the shoreline. The intricate details of the architecture, from the curved roofs of traditional Japanese buildings to the intricate designs adorning the temple gates, are brought to life through the delicate hand-coloring. Biwa Lake, also known as Omi-Gawa, is the largest freshwater lake in Japan, and has played an essential role in the country's history. It was a center of political power during the Heian and Muromachi periods, and was an important stop on the ancient Tōkaidō road, which connected Kyoto and Edo. This stunning photograph, now housed at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), serves as a reminder of the beauty and history that can be found in the natural world. The intricate details of the image, from the trees and plants lining the shore to the temples and monuments, invite us to explore the depths of Japan's rich cultural heritage. As we gaze upon this image, we are transported back in time, to a moment in history when the world moved at a slower pace, and the connection between people and nature was deeply intertwined. The unknown artist's masterful use of color and composition invites us to appreciate the timeless beauty of Biwa Lake and the history it holds.
