23"x19" (58x48cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 16x12 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 23x19 inches (584x482mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

Contrasting Worlds - New York Waterfront, 1891

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures the stark contrast between two worlds that coexisted on the bustling New York waterfront in 1891. On one side of the iconic 26th Street pier, we witness the opulence and glamour of smart society yachting parties. Dressed in their finest attire, men and women from the upper class enjoy a leisurely day out on their luxurious vessels, sipping wine and reveling in their privileged lives. However, as our gaze shifts to the other side of the pier, a different reality unfolds before us. Here lies a poignant scene depicting individuals who were less fortunate - criminals, sick individuals, and those facing indigence. They embark on ferries bound for Randalls Island, Harts Island, Wards Island, and Blackwells Island in the East River. These islands served as homes for institutions catering to those marginalized by society - prisons, hospitals for infectious diseases like tuberculosis or mental illnesses. Through this wood engraving created by Thure de Thulstrup in 1891 – during what was known as America's Gilded Age – we are reminded of both extremes that characterized this era: immense wealth alongside widespread poverty and social inequality. As we delve into this snapshot frozen in time over a century ago with its intricate details capturing life at that momentous period in history; it serves as an evocative reminder of how societies have evolved since then while also prompting reflection on ongoing
