Irmin. 3782208 Irmin; (add.info.: Irmin (captioned here as Hermensul or Irminsul)

3782208 Irmin; (add.info.: Irmin (captioned here as Hermensul or Irminsul), the Germanic god, reproduced from the 1656 woodcut in Herman Stangefol's Annales Circuli Westphaliae'. The role of Irmin is disputed and he has been recognised both as a national god of the Saxons and as an epithet of other gods such as Odin and Tyr.

Banner Early Baroque Idol Idols Saxon Scale Seventeenth Heraldry

23"x19" (58x48cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 16x12 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 23x19 inches (584x482mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate woodcut of Irmin, a Germanic god, taken from Herman Stangefol's 'Annales Circuli Westphaliae' in 1656. The image is a representation of the deity known as Hermensul or Irminsul and holds significant historical and mythological importance. Irmin's role has sparked debates among scholars, with some recognizing him as the national god of the Saxons while others consider him an epithet for other prominent gods like Odin and Tyr. The seventeenth-century drawing beautifully captures the essence of early baroque art with its detailed illustrations and mythical themes. As we delve into this piece, we are transported back to an era where religion played a central role in society, shaping beliefs and customs during both the Middle Ages and Renaissance period. Published in 1874 by Chapman and Hall in London, Paul Lacroix's book 'Manners, Customs & Dress' provides valuable insights into various aspects of history. This particular print serves as a testament to Germany's rich cultural heritage, shedding light on its religious practices through stunning visual imagery. The inclusion of elements such as coat of arms, heraldry symbols, knights adorned in armor holding banners adds depth to this artwork. It offers us a glimpse into European mythology while simultaneously showcasing the artistic prowess prevalent during that time. Bridgeman Images presents this remarkable photograph from Fine Art Finder without any commercial intentions.
