Pinching of the Nose - Neys Declaration, I Swear It Smells of Violet

996621 Pinching of the Nose - Neys Declaration, I Swear It Smells of Violet, 1815 (engraving) by French School, (19th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: Serrement de Nez - Serment de Ney, Je Jure que ca Sent la Violette. Michel Ney (1769-1815), popularly known as Marshal Ney, was a French soldier and military commander during the French Revolutionary Wars and the Napoleonic Wars. A pun in which the text completes the image - Ney sounds like Nez which is French for nose. On Napoleons return from exile in Elba, Ney promised the king that he would stop Napoleon on his march to Paris, but instead he joined Napoleon and commanded in the Waterloo campaign. He was condemned for treason by the house of peers and shot.

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This intriguing print titled "Pinching of the Nose - Neys Declaration, I Swear It Smells of Violet" captures a unique blend of history and humor. Created by the French School in the 19th century, this engraving depicts Michel Ney, also known as Marshal Ney, a prominent military commander during the French Revolutionary Wars and Napoleonic Wars. The image cleverly plays on words with a pun: Ney sounds like Nez, which means nose in French. The caption adds to the whimsical nature of the artwork as it states that Ney swears that something smells like violets. This juxtaposition between serious historical events and playful satire creates an engaging visual experience. Ney's story is one filled with conflicting loyalties. When Napoleon returned from exile in Elba, Ney initially promised King Louis XVIII to stop Napoleon's march to Paris but ultimately joined forces with his former leader during the Waterloo campaign. As a consequence for treason against France's monarchy, he was condemned by the house of peers and executed. The caricature-like portrayal in this print emphasizes both Ney's military prowess and his humorous side. With its satirical elements and comical undertones, this artwork offers viewers a glimpse into history through an entertaining lens.
