Comet Lovejoy and zodiacal light in City of Rocks State Park, New Mexico
January 16, 2015 - A scene looking west with a field stretching up to and beyond the zenith overhead, taking in the zodiacal light stretching up to the Pleiades at upper left. Just to the right of the Pleiades is green Comet Lovejoy, with its faint ion tail pointing away from the Sun along the same plane as the aodiacal light. Ion tails always point directly away from the Sun, as they are blown out by the solar wind. Comet Lovejoy was crossing the ecliptic this night, as it heads north in its orbit traveling almost perpendicular to the ecliptic plane. Also in the field at centre is a short streak of a meteor, apparently shooting toward the Sun as well

EDITORS COMMENTS
This breathtaking print captures the mesmerizing beauty of Comet Lovejoy and the ethereal glow of zodiacal light in City of Rocks State Park, New Mexico. Taken on January 16,2015, the scene unfolds with a vast field stretching towards the zenith overhead. The zodiacal light gracefully extends upwards, reaching towards the Pleiades at upper left. In this celestial dance, just to the right of the Pleiades shines green Comet Lovejoy, its faint ion tail pointing away from the Sun along the same plane as the zodiacal light. As if joining this cosmic spectacle, a short streak of a meteor shoots toward the Sun in perfect harmony. Comet Lovejoy's journey across our night sky is marked by its crossing of the ecliptic that night - an orbit taking it northward almost perpendicular to our planet's path around our star. This rare alignment creates an awe-inspiring display for stargazers and astrophotographers alike. The photograph showcases not only these celestial wonders but also highlights other elements such as open clusters like Messier 45 (the Pleiades), creating a luminous tapestry against a clear blue sky. With no human presence in sight, City of Rocks becomes an idyllic backdrop for this majestic display. Alan Dyer's skillful photography captures both scientific marvels and artistic brilliance in one frame; reminding us once again how small we are amidst this vast universe while evoking feelings of wonder and admiration for nature's grandeur.
