Artists concept of an exoplanet known as UCF-1. 01, orbiting a star called GJ 436

Artists concept of an exoplanet known as UCF-1.01, orbiting a star called GJ 436, which is located a mere 33 light-years away. Although probably rocky in composition like Earth, UCF-1.01 orbits scorchingly close to its star, so in all likelihood this planet lacks an atmosphere and might even have a molten surface, as shown in this artists impression.
Because of GJ 436s proximity to our solar system, the star field around it shares many of our cultures famous cosmic landmarks. To the far left, the constellation of Orion gleams, though in a distorted shape compared to our vantage point on Earth. The red giant Betelgeuse (Orions right shoulder) and blue Rigel (Orions left foot) stand out, as well as the three belt stars. From GJ 436s perspective, however, the stars do not align as they do in our sky. The Pleiades star cluster is located to the upper left of UCF-1.01

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an artist's concept of the exoplanet UCF-1.01 orbiting its star, GJ 436, a mere 33 light-years away from our solar system. While sharing similarities with Earth in terms of composition, UCF-1.01 is situated incredibly close to its star, resulting in scorching conditions that likely prevent the existence of an atmosphere and potentially give rise to a molten surface. The image also highlights the fascinating connection between GJ 436's star field and our own cultural cosmic landmarks. On the far left, we can glimpse the distorted shape of Orion constellation, adorned by Betelgeuse (the red giant representing Orion's right shoulder) and Rigel (representing Orion's left foot). Even though these stars do not align as they appear from Earth, their presence adds a sense of familiarity to this distant world. To further enhance this otherworldly scene, the Pleiades star cluster graces the upper left corner of UCF-1.01's perspective. The digitally generated illustration beautifully captures both the fiery nature surrounding this planet and its spherical form against a backdrop filled with celestial wonders. This artwork sparks imagination and invites us to contemplate what lies beyond our known universe. It represents humanity's ongoing quest for discovery in extrasolar planetary systems while showcasing elements from science fiction merged seamlessly with astronomical objects found in reality.
