Upper surface of a pea leaf

Scanning electron micrograph (coloured green) of the upper surface of a pea leaf, Pisum sativum, with the epidermis (left) stripped off (right) to show the palisade mesophyll layer beneath. The waxy epidermis is studded with open stomata, tiny pores that regulate gaseous exchange between the plant & the atmosphere. The palisade cells are elongated & packed closely together. They contain the chloroplasts, cellular organelles involved in the manufacture of starch from the suns energy, carbon dioxide & water (photosynthesis). During daylight when photosynthetic activity is high the stoma are open, at night or during a water shortage the pores close. Mag: X 100 (35mm). Original Original is B/W print B 745/46M

A2 Poster (59.4 x 42cm, 23.4" x 16.5" inches) printed on 170gsm Satin Poster Paper. Securely packaged, rolled and inserted into a strong mailing tube and shipped tracked. Poster Prints are of comparable archival quality to our Photographic prints, they are simply printed on thinner Poster Paper. Whilst we only use Photographic Prints in our frames, you can frame Poster Prints if they are carefully supported to prevent sagging over time.

Poster prints are budget friendly enlarged prints in standard poster paper sizes (A0, A1, A2, A3 etc). Whilst poster paper is sometimes thinner and less durable than our other paper types, they are still ok for framing and should last many years. Our Archival Quality Photo Prints and Fine Art Paper Prints are printed on higher quality paper and the choice of which largely depends on your budget.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate upper surface of a pea leaf, revealing its hidden secrets under the lens of a scanning electron microscope. The green-colored image highlights the mesmerizing structure and functionality of this vital plant organ. On the left side, we observe the stripped-off epidermis, exposing the underlying palisade mesophyll layer on the right. The waxy epidermis is adorned with numerous open stomata, tiny pores that play a crucial role in regulating gaseous exchange between the plant and its surroundings. These microscopic openings allow for efficient intake of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere while simultaneously releasing oxygen produced during photosynthesis. The palisade cells steal our attention as they stretch elongated and tightly packed together beneath. Within these remarkable cells lie chloroplasts - cellular organelles responsible for harnessing sunlight's energy to convert carbon dioxide and water into starch through photosynthesis. This process fuels growth and sustenance for plants, making them true masters at utilizing solar power. During daylight hours when photosynthetic activity peaks, these stomata remain open to facilitate gas exchange essential for energy production. However, in times of darkness or water scarcity, these pores seal shut to conserve precious resources. With a magnification level of 100 times (35mm), this original black-and-white print captures nature's botanical marvels in exquisite detail – an awe-inspiring testament to life's complexity within even seemingly ordinary elements like leaves from Pisum sativum (pea).
