Passion flower pollen. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a pollen grain of the passion flower (Passiflora cerulea). This spherical pollen grain resembles a tennis ball, with three germinal furrows dividing a highly-sculpted outer wall (exine). When a pollen grain, containing the male gametes, lands on the stigma of another passion flower, it germinates. A pollen tube grows out of one of the germinal furrows, growing down the stigma and into the ovary. The male gametes pass down the tube into the ovary where one fuses with an ovule (egg cell) to form a seed. Magnification: x2860 when printed 10cm wide

This print showcases the intricate beauty of a passion flower pollen grain. Under the scanning electron microscope (SEM), this spherical pollen grain appears reminiscent of a tennis ball, with its highly-sculpted outer wall divided by three germinal furrows. The exine, or outer layer, exhibits an array of patterns and textures that add to its visual appeal. In nature's reproductive dance, when this pollen grain lands on the stigma of another passion flower, it sets off a remarkable chain reaction. Germination occurs as a pollen tube emerges from one of the germinal furrows and grows down the stigma into the ovary.
