MAVEN spacecraft in orbit, artwork C018 / 2265

MAVEN spacecraft. Artwork of the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) spacecraft in orbit around Mars. The spacecraft launched on 18th November 2013 and is planned to reach Mars orbit on 22nd September 2014. From its orbit it will study the evolution of the Martian atmosphere. It is thought Mars used to have a thick atmosphere that made it warm enough for there to be liquid water on the surface. Data collected by MAVEN will shed light on how and why that atmosphere has been lost

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork captures the MAVEN spacecraft in orbit around Mars, showcasing its vital role in unraveling the mysteries of the Red Planet. Launched on November 18th, 2013, this unmanned probe is set to reach Mars orbit on September 22nd, 2014. From its vantage point high above the Martian surface, MAVEN will embark on a groundbreaking mission to study the evolution of the planet's atmosphere. Intriguingly, scientists believe that Mars once possessed a dense atmosphere that allowed for liquid water to exist on its surface. However, over time this atmosphere has been lost and understanding why and how it occurred remains an enigma. Enter MAVEN - armed with cutting-edge instruments and technology designed to shed light on these perplexing questions. With its keen focus on planetary science and exploration, MAVEN represents a significant milestone in our quest for knowledge about our neighboring celestial bodies. This awe-inspiring illustration showcases not only NASA's commitment to space research but also humanity's insatiable curiosity about distant worlds. As we gaze upon this mesmerizing image of MAVEN gracefully orbiting Mars against a backdrop of stars and galaxies, we are reminded of our boundless potential as explorers of the cosmos. Through scientific endeavors like this one, we inch closer towards unlocking the secrets hidden within our vast universe while inspiring future generations to dream big and reach for the stars.
