Comet Hyakutake on 13. 3. 96

Comet Hyakutake. Comet Hyakutake (at lower right), showing the comets bright head (coma) and long tail. Comet Hyakutake or 1996 B2 was one of the brightest comets to appear in the sky this century. Comets are mostly formed of water ice and dust. They usually have a diameter of a few kilometres and orbit the Sun with highly elongated orbits. It is only when a comet approaches the Sun that the water ice vaporises to form a tail of gas and dust. This always points away from the Sun because it is blown by charged particles (the solar wind) which come out of the star. The image was taken on 13 March 1996; the brightest star (at upper centre) is Algol (Beta Persei)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the mesmerizing beauty of Comet Hyakutake on 13.3.96, showcasing its bright head (coma) and long tail against the backdrop of a starry sky. Known as one of the most brilliant comets to grace our skies in this century, Comet Hyakutake or 1996 B2 is composed mainly of water ice and dust particles. With a diameter spanning just a few kilometers, comets like these follow highly elongated orbits around the Sun. It is during their approach towards our star that comets truly come alive, as the intense heat causes the water ice to vaporize into a magnificent tail comprised of gas and dust. This ethereal trail always points away from the Sun due to its interaction with charged particles emitted by our celestial giant - known as solar wind. The image was captured on 13th March 1996 and features Algol (Beta Persei), shining brightly at upper center stage amidst this cosmic spectacle. As we delve into this extraordinary snapshot from Science Photo Library, we are reminded once again of nature's awe-inspiring wonders that continue to captivate astronomers and stargazers alike.
