Bubble chamber photo of sigma particle decay. The sigma lives too briefly to be seen; its presence is deduced from other particles. A neutrino enters unseen at bottom & collides with a proton in the bubble chamber liquid, producing the sigma & a negative muon. The sigma decays to 1 negative & 3 positive pions, & a neutral lambda which leaves no track but betrays itself when it decays at lower centre (within the loop) to a proton & a negative pion. Negative particles curl anticlockwise, positive ones clockwise in the magnetic field. One positive pion is of lower energy & forms the loop; the muon & one of the pions knock out atomic electrons which produce the two spiral tracks

This print captures the intricate decay process of a sigma particle in a bubble chamber. The elusive nature of the sigma is revealed through its interaction with other particles, as it lives too fleetingly to be directly observed. In this mesmerizing image, an unseen neutrino enters from the bottom and collides with a proton suspended in the liquid-filled chamber. This collision gives birth to both the sigma particle and a negative muon. As time progresses, we witness the decay of the sigma into one negative pion, three positive pions, and a neutral lambda particle that leaves no visible trace. However, within the loop formed by these particles' trajectories lies evidence of their existence - when the lambda decays at lower center, it transforms into a proton and another negative pion. The magnetic field present in the chamber guides these charged particles along distinct paths: negatively charged ones curl anticlockwise while positively charged ones move clockwise. Among them, one positive pion stands out as it possesses lower energy and forms an intriguing loop-like pattern. Adding further complexity to this dynamic scene are atomic electrons knocked out by both the muon and one of the pions. These displaced electrons generate two spiral tracks that add depth to this microscopic world captured on film. Intriguingly detailed yet artistically composed, this monochrome photograph offers us a glimpse into subatomic interactions within bubble chambers – unveiling hidden realms where quarks dance alongside charmed particles like sigmas and charm quarks themselves play their enigmatic roles.
