Start of the construction of the Berlin Wall. At midnight on 13th August
Start of the construction of the Berlin Wall.
At midnight on 13th August the police and units of the East German army began to close the border and, by Sunday morning, 13 August, the border with West Berlin was closed. East German troops and workers had begun to tear up streets running alongside the border to make them impassable to most vehicles and to install barbed wire entanglements and fences along the 156 kilometres around the three western sectors as well as the 43 kilometres that divided West and East Berlin.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic print captures the pivotal moment in history when the construction of the Berlin Wall began. In the darkness of midnight on August 13th, 1961, police and East German army units initiated the closure of the border with West Berlin. By Sunday morning, a physical barrier had emerged, dividing a city that was once united. The image showcases scenes from Berlin after the border closure as preparations for constructing this infamous wall were underway. East German troops and workers can be seen tearing up streets adjacent to the border to prevent vehicular access while installing barbed wire entanglements and fences along a staggering total of 199 kilometers. The atmosphere depicted in this photograph is one filled with confusion and uncertainty. People are visible amidst crowds, witnessing firsthand how politics and division have physically manifested before their eyes. The presence of police officers and guards further emphasizes both control and tension during this time marked by Cold War rivalries. Terry Fincher's lens has frozen an indelible moment in time that symbolizes not only physical separation but also political ideologies at odds with each other. This picture serves as a reminder of how walls can be erected to divide communities but cannot extinguish humanity's yearning for unity.
