HMS Vindictive an Arrogant class cruiser seen here on 24th April 1918 after she was in fierce action at Zeebrugge. Vindictive was part of a raid to block the main entrance of the port thus preventing the Germans using the harbour as a submarine base. The smokescreen which was meant to cover her approach to the port failed and as she went alongside the Mole her upperworks were badly damaged by gunfire, her Captain, Alfred Carpenter was awarded a Victoria Cross for his actions during the raid

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the HMS Vindictive, an Arrogant class cruiser, on April 24th, 1918, immediately after a fierce battle at Zeebrugge. The Vindictive played a crucial role in a daring raid aimed at blocking the main entrance of the port to prevent German submarines from using it as their base. Despite facing numerous challenges during this operation, her resilience and determination shone through. As she approached the port under cover of a smokescreen that unfortunately failed to conceal her presence entirely, the Vindictive endured heavy gunfire which inflicted severe damage upon her upperworks. However, undeterred by these adversities, Captain Alfred Carpenter demonstrated exceptional bravery and leadership throughout the raid. In recognition of his extraordinary actions during this mission, Captain Carpenter was awarded the prestigious Victoria Cross. This photograph serves as a testament to both his heroism and the indomitable spirit of those who served aboard HMS Vindictive. Transporting us back to one of history's most turbulent periods - World War One - this image offers us a glimpse into naval warfare in the early 20th century. It reminds us of the sacrifices made by countless individuals who fought valiantly for their countries amidst unimaginable adversity. Officially licensed by Memory Lane Prints and not intended for commercial use, this print is an invaluable piece of historical documentation that pays homage to our brave sailors and commemorates their contributions during times of war and conflict.
