In this evocative photograph, Sir Douglas Mawson (1882-1958), the renowned Australian explorer and geologist, is seen with his wife, Lady Mawson, upon their arrival in Victoria, London, in 1914. The image captures a moment of respite in the midst of a remarkable career that would see Sir Douglas lead three major Antarctic expeditions between 1911 and 1914. Born in South Australia, Sir Douglas Mawson's passion for geology was ignited during his time at the University of Adelaide. He went on to study at the University of Melbourne and the University of Edinburgh, where he earned a doctorate in geology. His groundbreaking research on the geology of Antarctica would forever change the scientific understanding of the continent. The Mawsons' arrival in London marked a significant moment in their lives. Sir Douglas was there to present his findings from the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition (1911-1913), during which he and his team made important discoveries, including the magnetic anomaly known as the Mawson Anomaly.
