EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures the tense atmosphere of the trial of Gavrilo Princip and his accomplices for the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his wife, Sophie, in Sarajevo on 28 June 1914. Seated from left to right are Nedeljko Cabrinovic, Trifko Grabez, Gavrilo Princip, Vaso Čubrilović, and Danilo Ilić, all wearing formal attire and with folded hands, as they listen intently to the proceedings. Behind them, the presiding judge and the prosecutor stand, while armed guards are stationed at the entrance of the courtroom. The assassination of the Archduke and his wife, which took place in the streets of Sarajevo, marked the spark that ignited the First World War. Princip, a member of the Serbian nationalist group the Black Hand, had carried out the attack as part of a larger plan to unite the South Slavic peoples under one rule. The trial, which took place in the City Hall of Sarajevo, was closely watched by the international press and the public. Princip and his co-defendants were charged with high treason, murder, and attempted regicide. The trial lasted for several days, and the defendants were eventually found guilty and sentenced to death by hanging. This photograph offers a unique glimpse into a pivotal moment in history, as the fate of Europe hung in the balance and the course of the 20th century was set in motion.
