EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph captures the moment when a Royal Air Force York transport airplane touched down at Gatow Airport in Berlin on July 21, 1949, marking the delivery of the millionth ton of supplies during the Berlin Airlift. The crowd of officials and dignitaries gathered around the plane, a testament to the international effort to support the 2.5 million inhabitants of West Berlin during the 11-month-long crisis. In April 1948, Soviet Union leader Joseph Stalin imposed a land blockade on all supplies entering West Berlin from Western Europe. In response, the British and American governments organized an enormous airlift to deliver food, fuel, and other essentials to the city. The airlift proved to be a remarkable feat of logistics and determination, with over 200,000 flights carrying more than 2.3 million tons of cargo. The York transport plane in this image is shown after landing with the millionth ton of supplies, a significant milestone in the operation. The successful conclusion of the airlift came on May 12, 1949, when Stalin conceded defeat and lifted the land blockade. This photograph is a powerful reminder of the resilience and cooperation of the international community in the face of adversity.
