EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithograph, titled 'Costumes, Artworks, and Appliances from the Middle Ages to the 17th Century,' depicts an enchanting array of German fashions from the 15th century. The image, created by the renowned German museum curator, archaeologist, art historian, illustrator, and etcher, Dr. Jakob Heinrich von Hefner-Alteneck, showcases a mi-parti scene, where both a man and a woman are dressed in the characteristic attire of the era. The man, possibly representing a member of the Duke of Saxony's lineage, dons a panzerjacke, a type of German armor jacket, adorned with intricate embossing and richly embroidered decorations. He also wears a French breastplate, a fashionable accessory during this period, and a spur on his left boot. The woman, on the other hand, is dressed in a voluminous gown, featuring a fitted bodice and full skirt, with a high-neckline and long, flowing sleeves. Her headdress, adorned with pearls and feathers, adds an elegant touch to her ensemble. Surrounding the central figures are other individuals dressed in various 15th-century German fashions. One man wears a simple tunic, while another dons a fur-lined cloak. A woman in the background is depicted wearing a hooded mantle, and a young boy is shown wearing a short tunic and hose, with a spur on his left boot. This exquisite illustration, lithographed by C.R. Dr. Hefner-Alteneck, was originally published in Frankfurt in 1889 as part of a larger work on costumes and artworks from the Middle Ages to the 17th century. The meticulous attention to detail and the rich use of color make this chromolithograph a valuable historical record of German fashions during the 15th century.
