EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving, taken from Friedrich Johann Bertuch's Bilderbuch fur Kinder (Picture Book for Children), published in Weimar in 1823, offers a fascinating comparison of the heights of some of the world's most renowned mountains and the quaint mountain towns nestled at their bases. The engraving features Dhaulagiri, the seventh highest peak in the world, located in the majestic Himalayas. Also depicted are Chimborazo in the Andes of South America, Mont Blanc in the Alps of Europe, and Mount Etna, the active volcano in Italy. The image further showcases the picturesque towns of Chota (Micuipampa), Quito, and Cinchoma, situated at the foot of these mountains. Chota, located in present-day Ecuador, is shown with its vibrant houses and lush greenery, while Quito, the capital city of Ecuador, is depicted as a bustling urban center. Cinchoma, a small town in Bolivia, is illustrated with its traditional adobe houses and agricultural terraces. The meticulous attention to detail in this engraving is evident in the way the mountains are depicted, with their distinct shapes and snow-capped peaks, as well as the intricate depiction of the towns and their surroundings. This image not only provides a visual representation of the grandeur of these mountains but also offers a glimpse into the daily life of the communities that call them home. The use of handcolouring adds an extra layer of depth and richness to the print, making it a stunning addition to any collection of historical illustrations or maps. This engraving is a testament to the artistic and cartographic achievements of the early 19th century and serves as a reminder of the enduring allure of the natural world and the human spirit that has sought to explore and document it.
