This engraving depicts Klemens Wenzel Nepomuk Lothar von Metternich-Winneburg (1773-1859), an Austrian statesman and diplomat who rose to prominence in European politics during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Metternich, with his distinctive moustache and sideburns, is shown here in a formal seated position, dressed in the attire of a prince. He served as Chancellor of Austria from 1809, succeeding Stadion, and held a pivotal role in European affairs during the tumultuous period following the Napoleonic Wars. Between 1814 and 1815, Metternich chaired the Congress of Vienna, an assembly of European powers convened to reestablish peace and order in Europe. The Congress resulted in the imposition of a new political order based on the principles of the Old Regime, which sought to maintain the balance of power and prevent the emergence of revolutionary ideologies. Metternich's diplomatic skills and political acumen played a crucial role in shaping the European political landscape for decades to come.
