EDITORS COMMENTS
This illustration showcases the mighty Megalosaurus, an extinct carnivorous dinosaur that once roamed the Middle Jurassic period, approximately 140 million years ago, in what is now Europe. The Megalosaurus, a bipedal carnosaur, was one of the first dinosaurs to be discovered, with fossils unearthed primarily in the English Midlands and Southern England. Measuring up to 20 feet in length, this fearsome creature stood tall and powerful, with a robust build and a set of sharp claws and teeth. This illustration, created in the 20th century, captures the Megalosaurus in its natural habitat – the daytime landscapes of Europe during the Jurassic era. As part of the Archosauria, Megalosaurus was a diapsid, characterized by a pair of openings in the skull for the temporal fenestra. It belonged to the Dinosauria, a group of diapsids with a hollow skeleton and a four-chambered heart. More specifically, Megalosaurus was a ceratosaurian, a subgroup of theropods characterized by their elongated snouts and small, forward-pointing horns above their eyes. The Megalosaurus was a formidable hunter, preying on other dinosaurs and large reptiles. Its powerful legs allowed it to move swiftly and efficiently, making it a force to be reckoned with in its daytime domain. This illustration serves as a reminder of the awe-inspiring creatures that once inhabited our planet, offering a glimpse into the rich history of life on Earth.
