EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the historic LCC-MFB Greenwich fire station, located at the corner of Lindsell Street and South Street in SE10, Greenwich. Built by the Metropolitan Board of Works (LCC-MFB), a forerunner of the London Council, in the late 1890s, this Victorian-era fire station served the community for over six decades. The red brick building with its distinctive arched windows and tall chimney was a symbol of protection and safety for the residents of Greenwich. The Metropolitan Board of Works was responsible for the construction and maintenance of buildings and infrastructure in London before the establishment of the London County Council in 1889. This fire station, one of many built by the Board, remained in operation until 1961 when a new fire station was opened to replace it. The photograph transports us back in time to the early 20th century, with the horses and fire engines parked outside the station, ready for action. The firefighters in their traditional uniforms, with their helmets and leather coats, are a testament to the bravery and dedication of the fire service during this era. The demolition of this historic fire station marked the end of an era, but its legacy lives on in the memories of the local community and in the archives of the London Fire Brigade. Today, the site where the station once stood is a reminder of the vital role that fire stations play in protecting our communities and keeping us safe.
