This photograph, taken in the 1950s, depicts a Breathing Apparatus Entry Control Point set up by the London Fire Brigade. The use of breathing apparatus became increasingly common during larger fires due to the hazardous conditions that made it necessary for firefighters to wear self-contained air supplies to survive. However, the entry and exit of firefighters in breathing apparatus was identified as a critical area of risk, following tragic incidents where firemen had died due to poorly recorded locations and entry times. In response to these incidents, more detailed entry control procedures were introduced by the London Fire Brigade to manage the entry and exit of firefighters wearing breathing apparatus. These procedures aimed to improve safety and accountability, ensuring that the location and time of entry were accurately recorded for each firefighter. The entry control point is shown here with a board displaying the names of firefighters and their entry times, demonstrating the importance of this system in minimizing the risk to firefighters' lives. The London Fire Brigade's commitment to implementing these measures marked a significant step forward in firefighting safety practices during the 1950s.
