EDITORS COMMENTS
In the mid 1970s, the London Fire Brigade (LFB) responded to an increasing number of incidents involving toxic or dangerous chemicals, necessitating special procedures for dealing with the spillages and decontaminating the firefighters involved. To meet this need, the LFB introduced this innovative appliance, based on a Commer van, as part of their Chemical Incident Unit (CIU). This photograph, taken at Southwark, the LFB's main training school located in SE1, shows the vehicle in action. The 1970s were a period of significant change for the fire service, with a growing emphasis on health and safety in the working environment. In response, the LFB adapted to these new challenges, introducing a range of innovative appliance designs to ensure they were equipped to deal effectively with the complexities of chemical incidents. The CIU appliance, as seen here, was a crucial addition to the LFB's fleet. Its design allowed for the safe transportation and containment of hazardous materials, as well as providing facilities for decontaminating firefighters and equipment. The vehicle's versatility and adaptability made it an essential tool in the brigade's response to chemical incidents. The London Fire Brigade's commitment to innovation and safety is evident in this photograph, which captures the CIU in action at Southwark. The van's presence at the training school underscores the importance of preparation and training in ensuring that the brigade was ready to face the challenges of the ever-evolving working environment. This photograph is a fascinating glimpse into the history of the London Fire Brigade and the innovative appliances that helped shape its response to chemical incidents in the 1970s. It serves as a reminder of the crucial role that the fire service plays in keeping communities safe and prepared for emergencies. Mary Evans Picture Library / Mary Evans [Image ID: 1022200]
