Jacques Antoine Marie de Cazales: A Prominent Figure in Late 18th Century French Politics This striking portrait captures Jacques Antoine Marie de Cazales (1758-1805), a prominent French statesman who played a significant role in the political landscape of late 18th century France. Born in Bordeaux, Cazales rose to prominence during the French Revolution, serving as a deputy to the National Assembly and later becoming a member of the Council of Five Hundred. Cazales was known for his moderate views and his commitment to the rule of law. He was a vocal opponent of the radical elements within the Revolution, advocating for a more measured approach to political change. Despite his moderate stance, Cazales was not afraid to challenge the powers that be when he believed it was necessary. In 1791, he famously opposed the king's flight to Varennes, a failed attempt by King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette to escape from France.
