Guillaume IV, Comte de Hainault, also known as William IV, ruled the County of Holland from 1337 until his untimely death in 1345. In this striking portrait, Guillaume is depicted wearing an impressive array of practical armor, designed to protect him in battle, and impractical footwear, which may have been more for show than function. The intricate details of his armor, adorned with various nuts and bolts, suggest a high level of craftsmanship and attention to detail.
