This striking mounted specimen of the Passenger Pigeon (Ectopistes migratoria), displayed at The Natural History Museum in London, offers a haunting reminder of a bird once abundant over North America but now extinct since 1914. The Passenger Pigeon, a member of the Columbidae family and order Sauropsida, was known for its distinctive grey plumage and blue sheen, particularly noticeable in this studio shot. Once numbering in the billions, these birds formed massive flocks that darkened the sky as they flew. The Passenger Pigeon's demise was a result of overhunting and habitat destruction. Their population decline began in the late 1800s, and despite conservation efforts, the last known individual, a bird named Martha, died in the Cincinnati Zoo in 1914. This mounted specimen, with its piercing gaze and poised perch, stands as a testament to the Passenger Pigeon's former existence. Its presence in the museum's collection serves as a reminder of the importance of conservation and the potential consequences of human actions on the natural world.
