Columbiformes, a diverse order of birds, encompasses various species such as the Eurasian Collared Dove and the New Zealand Pigeon Kereru. With their pigeon-like appearance, these birds are known for their distinctive features. The Eurasian Collared Dove showcases buffy-pink plumage and a black neck collar that adds to its charm. On the other hand, the New Zealand Pigeon Kereru exhibits its unique beauty with vibrant colors and an elegant demeanor. The Columbiformes order also includes extinct species like the Reunion white dodo (Raphus solitarius) and the infamous dodo (Raphus cucullatus). These flightless birds were once found on islands but sadly became extinct due to human activities. Their existence is now preserved through illustrations and skeletal remains. Muffed Flying Tumblers are another fascinating breed within this order. These pigeons possess remarkable flying abilities combined with attractive feather patterns that make them stand out in any flock. Speaking of design, Didus ineptus or dodo designs have become popular motifs in art and culture worldwide. This extinct bird's distinct appearance has inspired many artists throughout history. A mosaic depicting doves drinking from a vase serves as a testament to how deeply rooted they can in our cultural heritage. This artwork is a copy of an ancient Pergamenian original dating back to the 2nd century B. C. , showcasing how these gentle creatures have captivated humans for centuries. Lastly, we cannot forget about Ryukyu pigeon (Columba jouyi), which belongs to this avian family too. Found exclusively in Japan's Ryukyu Islands, this unique species adds diversity to Columbiformes with its own set of characteristics. Columbiformes encompass a wide range of bird species - from living ones like Eurasian Collared Doves and New Zealand Pigeon Kereru to extinct ones like the dodo.
