This print depicts the historic moment of the Surrender of Ptolemais during the Third Crusade in July 1191. The scene unfolds as the city's Byzantine governor, John of Ibelin, relinquishes control of Ptolemais to two of the most renowned leaders of the Crusade, King Philip II Augustus of France and King Richard the Lionhearted of England. The original painting, created by Merry Joseph Blondel in 1840, has been beautifully engraved and is now housed in the Biblioteca de Catalunya (National Library of Catalonia) in Barcelona, Spain. The Crusade, initiated in 1189, aimed to recapture the Holy Land from Saladin, who had seized Jerusalem in 1187. The surrender of Ptolemais marked a significant victory for the Crusaders, allowing them to regain a strategic foothold in the region. The intricate details of this engraving transport us back to this pivotal moment in history, showcasing the grandeur and importance of the Third Crusade and the pivotal role played by Philip II Augustus and Richard the Lionhearted.
