The scene unfolds as the city's Byzantine governor, John of Ibelin, relinquishes control of Ptolemais to two of the most renowned leaders of the Crusade, King Philip II Augustus of France and King Richard the Lionhearted of England. The original painting, created by Merry Joseph Blondel in 1840, has been beautifully engraved and is now housed in the Biblioteca de Catalunya (National Library of Catalonia) in Barcelona, Spain. The Crusade, initiated in 1189, aimed to recapture the Holy Land from Saladin, who had seized Jerusalem in 1187.
