In this image from John James Audubon's "Birds of America," we find ourselves in the heart of a dramatic encounter between a Northern Bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) and a Red-shouldered Hawk (Buteo lineatus). Plate 76 of this iconic work, hand-colored aquatint engraving, showcases the intricate details of these birds in their natural habitat.
