EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures the distinguished visage of Captain Alfred Arthur Chase Parr (1852-1923) at the pinnacle of his naval career, as he was appointed as Naval Aide-de-Camp to Queen Victoria in 1899. Parr's impressive uniform adorned with numerous decorations and insignia, including the Order of the Bath and the Royal Victorian Order, signifies his high rank and dedication to the British Royal Navy. His well-groomed beard, which was a common feature among naval officers of the era, adds to his authoritative and mature appearance. Captain Parr's naval career began in 1865 when he joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class. He rose through the ranks, demonstrating exceptional skill and leadership, and was promoted to the rank of Captain in 1894. Parr's service in the navy spanned over three decades, during which he saw action in various conflicts, including the Anglo-Egyptian War and the Second Boer War. As Naval Aide-de-Camp to Queen Victoria, Parr was responsible for assisting the monarch in her naval duties and representing her at naval events. He served in this position until her death in 1901. This portrait, taken in 1899, commemorates a significant milestone in Parr's naval career and his close association with the British monarchy.
